South Texas Family Files Mesothelioma Lawsuit

The Southeast Texas Record reported last month that twelve companies are facing a lawsuit following the death of a former oil refinery operator due to mesothelioma. According to the Record, the children of John Biondo filed a lawsuit on November 4 against General Electric Co. and CBS Corp., in Galveston County District Court. Biondo was allegedly employed by Texas City Refining Inc. facilities from 1954 to 1994. Biondo’s lawsuit claims that he was exposed to asbestos dust and fiber during his employment before 1980. “As a result of his exposure to asbestos dust and/or fibers while employed by Texas City Refining Inc. John Biondo contracted asbestos-related mesothelioma which ultimately took his life,” the lawsuit says. Locomotives Manufactured in China Falsely Certified as Asbestos Free

Locomotives imported from China have exposed railway workers to deadly asbestos despite a decade old ban on asbestos containing imports. Sadly, the locomotives were inspected and certified asbestos free. This news does much to tarnish the public opinion of the efficacy of asbestos import certificates. Maintenance workers initially “identified a lot of white dust among [diesel] engines and asked the question as to whether or not that dust was safe,” according to the national secretary of the Rail, Tram and Bus Union. Upon further inspection the white dust was found to be asbestos. It was used as insulation in the exhaust/muffler system, around coolant pipes and in the brake exhaust system. Actor Ed Lauter Dies After Mesothelioma Diagnosis

Last month, character actor Ed Lauter, who is best known for his roles in movies like The Artist, The Longest Yard, King Kong, Cujo, Leaving Las Vegas and Seabiscuit, died from mesothelioma. The actor died on October 15—only five months after he discovered that he had the form of terminal cancer caused by asbestos exposure. “One of those character actors whose name is unknown but is instantly recognizable, he is listed with an incredible 204 credits as an actor,” the Hollywood Reporter said. Lauter joins a list of entertainers who have died from mesothelioma including Steve McQueen, Paul Gleason, Merlin Olsen and Warren Zevon. According to the Hollywood Reporter, a scholarship fund through the Ed Lauter Foundation has been established in his honor to be awarded to young actors.
