Cameron is the county seat of Milam County, located on the Little River in north central Texas. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Cameron has a population of 5,770 with a total area of 4.2 square miles.
With a town motto of “Hometown, Texas”, Cameron boasts a peaceful, friendly and civic-minded community that is nestled in the heart of rivers, lakes and outdoor country living.
Cameron is located at the junction of U.S. Highways 77 and 190, approximately 71 miles northeast of Austin.
Attractions, Zoos and Parks
The city government has been actively revitalizing the community by removing old unstable structures in preparation for new growth. The downtown has experienced a continuing renovation that began with the historic courthouse and an 1891 Victorian-style building that is now Cameron City Hall McLane Municipal Center.
The Milam County Historical Museum is located in the restored county jail, which was originally built in 1865. The museum includes exhibits of pioneer farm equipment and artifacts, as well as cells, shackles and a gallows tower.
Cameron resident John Johnson created a scale diorama of Cameron that captures the town as it appeared during the 1940s, which can be seen on exhibit at the Milam County Clerk’s Annex.
Cameron is home to the Milam Community Theater which puts on local shows year-round.
Cameron is home to several parks: Cameron Park, Orchard Park, City Park, West 12th Street Park, Wilson-Ledbetter Park, OJ Thomas Park and Airport Park Complex. Cameron’s has a City Pool, which features horseshoe pits.
Cameron is home to Nature Fest, an annual festival that hosts educational activities covering birds, bats, bees, wildflowers and more, including lots of fun activities for kids of all ages.
