Former YMCA Building Owner Charged with Asbestos Violations

According to the Associated Press, the owner of the former YMCA facility in Sioux City, Iowa has been indicted on several charges including asbestos removal violations. The news outlet reported that Larry Wolf has been charged with nine counts of work practice standards violations and one count each of failing to notify state and federal agencies of his intent to do renovation work and making false statements to the federal Environmental Protection Agency. Wolf’s indictment claims that he had insulation containing asbestos removed from pipes inside the former YMCA building, and did not follow proper removal and disposal procedures. He was scheduled to be arraigned last week. Wolf declined to comment about the matter, but said that he did not renovate the building. Were You Exposed to Asbestos Through a Garlock Product? Bankruptcy Fight Continues

According to the Associated Press, asbestos lawyers are accusing Garlock Sealing Technologies of committing fraud in its ongoing bankruptcy case. The news outlet reported that the Official Committee of Asbestos Personal Injury Claimants has filed a motion in U.S. Bankruptcy Court to revisit a ruling early this year about Garlock’s financial obligations to people suffering from asbestos-related health claims. “Garlock has committed a fraud upon the court,” the committee wrote in a memorandum, according to the AP. The group said that the company has cherry-picked evidence to present to the court, which is similar to a claim made against the attorneys by Garlock. In January, the court ordered Garlock to pay no more than $125 million to settle any current and future mesothelioma claims against it, after attorneys for plaintiffs argued for more than $1 billion. Prominent Senator Steps Down After Delivering For Mesothelioma-Affected Residents

According to the Montana Standard, a prominent asbestos-related disease advocate stepped down from the U.S. Senate recently to become the ambassador to China. Last week, the paper ran an editorial about Sen. Max Baucus-D, who it claims has helped one city in particular, Libby, where many people are affected with mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases. Libby was the home to a now-defunct vermiculite mine last operated by W.R. Grace & Co. “Just about every step of the way, Max has been there,” Gayla Benefield, a Libby resident and activist, told the Standard. “All we’ve had to do is ask, and he’s been right on it.” According to the paper, more than 3,000 people from Libby have been diagnosed with asbestos-related lung disease, while 400 have died.
