Asbestos Warning: Claire’s Pulls Makeup Products

Claire’s has pulled some makeup products off the shelf after they were allegedly found to contain asbestos.  According to the Chicago Tribune, the mother of a child in Rhode Island had her daughter’s makeup sent to an independent lab for testing after becoming suspicious of the contents, which revealed the presence of tremolite asbestos. The affected products allegedly include the Pink Glitter Cellphone Makeup Compact and Bedazzled Rainbow Heart Makeup Set. Claire’s said that it is investigating the products and has hired an independent lab to run an analysis on them. Companies Can Be Sued When Workers Bring Asbestos Home

In late 2016, the California Supreme Court ruled that companies can be held liable if cancerous asbestos from job sites makes someone at a worker’s home sick. The ruling let lawsuits proceed in the state on the behalf of family members and roommates of employees who may have brought home asbestos on their personal clothing or artifacts. According to the Los Angeles Times, the ruling was a result of two lawsuits. One lawsuit was filed on behalf of a man, age 53, who was diagnosed with perotineal mesothelioma in 2011, who died three years later. His uncle reportedly worked at a brake manufacturing plant in Virginia around asbestos-containing products, and he spent several nights per week at his home. The other lawsuit was filed on behalf of a woman whose husband worked for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, a predecessor of BNSF Railway Co., according to the newspaper. The…

Are Devine, Texas Residents Being Exposed to Asbestos in Their Water?

A letter sent out to residents of Devine, Texas recently indicated that high levels of asbestos may be present in its water. The letter was issued by the city on November 28, indicating that the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) found “the drinking water being supplied to customers had exceeded the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for asbestos.” The town sits about 40 miles southwest of San Antonio.  According to reports, water samples take in January and July showed high levels of fibers per liter (MFL). One sample reportedly read 44.3 MFL, when the permitted amount allowed by the agency is 7 MFL. The letter notes that residents do not have to use a different water source.
